Ukraine Peace Efforts, Domestic Church Controversy, and Economic Growth Define Georgian News Day

Today, international attention in Georgia remained focused on the ongoing high-level negotiations in Berlin between Ukraine and the United States. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the discussions as substantial and effective, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested a “real chance for peace” has emerged since the war began. However, reports also indicated that U.S. negotiators are pressing Ukraine to potentially cede Donbas, highlighting complex territorial disagreements.

Domestically, a significant controversy unfolded within the Georgian Orthodox Church as the Patriarchate suspended Archimandrite Dorotheos (Qurashvili) from his priestly duties. Archimandrite Dorotheos publicly stated that this decision would not hinder him, but rather empower his struggle, potentially emboldening the government. President Salome Zourabichvili voiced her strong support for him, announcing her intention to join a protest on Rustaveli Avenue, criticizing the Patriarchate's decision as a disgrace to the Georgian Church.

Economically, Georgia continued to show resilience. Remittances to the country saw an 11.8% increase in November 2025, while tourism revenues for the year are projected to reach $4.6 billion USD. The official exchange rate for the U.S. dollar settled at 2.6981 GEL. Furthermore, 1.2 million visitors were recorded in Georgia's protected areas over the past 11 months, setting a new record. A major financial amnesty for energy sector companies, waiving 1 billion GEL in accumulated penalties, was also a prominent development.

In sports, UFC champion Ilia Topuria issued a public statement addressing severe pressure and threats related to his personal life, leading to a temporary halt in his title defense, even as he received the prestigious Marca Legend award. Fellow Georgian MMA fighter Merab Dvalishvili's recent loss prompted a Russian promoter to comment on his frequent fights being financially motivated. On the football front, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's transfer market value remained stable at 90 million EUR, while Richard Cockerill resigned as the head coach of the Georgian national rugby team. Internationally, Ramzan Kadyrov accused Georgia of obstructing the Chechnya-Shatili road project, stating Georgia was “unfavorable” despite signed agreements.
