გასული საუკუნის 50-60-იან წლებში ვაშინგტონის და ნიუ-იორკის პარკებში ხშირად დასეირნობდა მაღალი და ყოველთვის ელეგანტურად ჩაცმული მამაკაცი. მასთან ერთად სკამზე მსხდომ პირებში გამვლელები მსხვილ სახელმწიფო მოღვაწეებს და ბიზნესმენებს ამოიცნობდნენ ხოლმე. განსაკუთრებით უინსტონ ჩერჩილის კოლორიტული ფიგურა გამოირჩეოდა.

რუსეთში რევოლუციის შემდეგ, ბერნარდ ბარუხი საბჭოთა რეჟიმთან თანამშრომლობის მთავარი მომხრე იყო. მოლაპარაკებების შემდეგ, ახალშექმნილი საბჭოთა რესპუბლიკის აღმშენებლობისთვის ლენინმა ბიზნესმენი პირადად მოიწვია. 1920-30-იან წლებში ვოლგოგრადში, ჩელიაბინსკსა და ხარკოვში პირველი ტრაქტორთმშენებელი ქარხნები სწორედ ბარუხმა ააშენა. რა თქმა უნდა, ქარხნები ორმაგი დანიშნულებისა იყო – ტრაქტორებთან ერთად შემდგომ წლებში აქ ტანკების გამოშვებაც დაიწყეს.

1929 წლის 24 ოქტომბერს ნიუ-იორკის ბირჟის კრახის დღეს, ბარუხის კაპიტალს 1 ცენტიც არ დაკლებია. მოსალოდნელი საფრთხის შესახებ მან 1 წლით ადრე იცოდა და ბირჟაზე თამაში შეწყვიტა. ბარუხმა ყველა აქცია გაყიდა და მიღებული თანხით აშშ-ის მთავრობის ობლიგაციები შეიძინა. ამით მან საკუთარი კაპიტალი გაუფასურებას გადაარჩინა.

1940-იანი წლების დასაწყისისთვის ბერნარდ ბარუხი უკვე მილიარდერი იყო. მისი ბიზნესის ხელშეუხებლობა წლების განმავლობაში ქვეყნის უმაღლეს ეშელონებთან მტკიცე მეგობრობამ განაპირობა. ვუდრო ვილსონის შემდეგ, ბარუხი პრეზიდენტების უორენ ჰარდინგის, ჰერბერტ ჰუვერის, ფრანკლინ რუზველტისა და ჰარი თრუმენის უცვლელი მრჩეველი იყო.
